J. Crew made waves last Autumn when they introduced their giant fit chino. The brand that has been synonymous with the phrase “slim fit“ finally made a drastic change to the ethos of their menswear line.
Baggier fits have been gaining a lot of momentum over the past couple of years, and J. Crew finally giving in and updating their mainline fits was a big turning point for normie fashion.
This Autumn, they followed up the success of the giant fit chino by introducing the giant fit oxford. Another step that points toward the Crew leaning into that 90’s Polo Ralph Lauren aesthetic, where everything is tastefully oversized.
Honestly this is great and I’m a big proponent of baggier fits coming back. As someone who has picked up a weight more than once in his life, actually having room in the thighs of my pants and the chest/upper arms of my shirts kicks ass.
I’ve spent the last few years trying to make uncomfortable, overly-restrictive clothing work, since that was all that was available. This new diversity of clothing cuts puts that issue to rest (hopefully for good!).
In other words, the oppressive supremacy of the slim fit is now in its twilight days, and us Big Strong Lads™ are eating well.
My Thoughts
First, some Outfit details:
-J. Crew Giant Fit oxford
-Proper Cloth MTO jeans
-Astorflex Dukeflex chukkas
These things absolutely live up to the name. They’re incredibly roomy through the chest and the upper arm, which creates a favorable drape when tucked in. Speaking of tucking your shirt in, you more-or-less need to keep it tucked, because this oxford is LONG. I will say that if you’re really trying to channel you inner 90’s (and the rest of your outfit is appropriately baggy), you can probably pull off the untucked vibe.
For reference, I’m 6’2”, 205 lbs, with a 45” chest, wearing a size Large.
Otherwise, the material itself is a bit nicer than the normal J. Crew oxfords that I own. I purchased this one on sale for ~$23, which in my opinion, is an absolute steal for what you’re getting.
Honestly just having enough room to move around comfortably without looking like I’m a kid wearing my Dad’s clothes is almost worth the full price of $98 on its own.
My only real complaint is that it has a button on the back of the collar, but that’s more of a personal preference thing that anything else. That said, this is balanced out by the inclusion of a locker loop and box pleat, which I consider a huge plus.
A few more details/measurements (all measurements were taken after a single wash/dry):
Hope you guys enjoyed the rundown! I genuinely really like this shirt, and if you don’t mind waiting, you should be able to get them in the $25 range (J. Crew is rarely worth it at full price IMO), which is a really great price point for some solid wardrobe basics.
Now to wear it until the collar starts to fray aha
back of collar button slander! cant stand for it!
Love the botton on the back, personally. A touch J. Press adds to theirs. An inessential differentiator.
